Lad doing my bathroom today was about to hang the wall-hung sink on the wall (no plinth). Stud wall, that he previously opened up to embed pipework, before plasterboarding and tiling. Turns out he didn't put any studs/noggins in place to take the bolts on which the sink is to be hung. I stopped him from carrying on, and called his boss.

Boss insists it's not a problem, with the right plasterboard fasteners plus appropriate adhesive on the back, it will be more than strong enough. Sink weighs 16kg, presumably holds around 5-10L of water, plus gets leaned on of course.

I'm pretty old school with these things, and to me, drilling into a stud/noggin is the only way this should be done. But am I behind the times and getting my knickers in a twist over nothing? If needs be, we'll take the tiles off and do it again, but if it's really the case that plasterboard fixings are more than adequate (wall is tiled too, with 300x600x10 tiles), then I don't want to be that old **** who insists he's right and creates more work than is needed, even if I'd prefer it that way.

Thoughts?

I am with you on the solid fix into studwork or a backing board behind the plasterboard approach but there are some very good cavity fixings around today and these claim to be VERY strong :

If you do decide to do it "right" at worst you may just have to remove a few freshly fitted tiles and cut yourself a big enough gap to install some kind of bearer and then retile so not the end of the world and it would give you peace of mind.

It's not a sink, it's a basin. Sinks go in kitchens...

Don't think I'd accept the present situation. You need a good bit of timber in the wall, and some Fischer bolt fixings to hang the basin off. I like to put some Sticks Like S**t on the back of the basin too for belt & braces. Is there any possibility of gaining access to the required area for noggins from the other side of the wall? It would save pulling tiles off....

Totally agree with muggles. Any strain on the basin will be pulling on the plasterboard and the tiles , which don't take kindly to being stressed. It should have been anchored to timbers.

My feeling was to insist on timber and this thread has confirmed my choice. Doing it from the bathroom side means removing all tiles that overlap in anyway the area under the basin, putting in the timber and re boarding and tiling. Coming from the other side of the wall, I’d need to cut through the 150 year old lathe and plaster face.... I think I prefer the first option!!
