Hi all,

I'm looking to build a stable/field shelter. It would be getting built on compacted hardcore but I am wanting to put a layer of concrete/brick in before putting a timber frame on top of that to prevent the wood getting damp. The existing stables we have were built straight onto the ground and are basically rotting from the bottom up. One way I was thinking of doing that was using concrete lintels underneath the timber. Would this work or can anyone think of any issues.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The word 'field shelter' usually means a non fixed structure that can be moved to avoid planning conditions?

Will the building have sides all round, and is it a windy location? You have to consider the risk of it taking off!

I haven't fully decided if it will be a field shelter or go through full stable route. I'm leaning towards the later though. It would have walls on all sides of that was the case. I was planning on bolting the wood to the lintels and then using a groundbolt system at the corners and midspans to hold it down. It is a windy area though where I am planning to put them would be somewhat sheltered.

Have you thought about a pole barn? Just need to get some good bits of wood for the posts, old telegraph/hydro poles are good, or some other durable timber

I did think about a pole barn. It would be an option.

I would of liked a concrete base but unfortunately the quotes I got were too much and the area needed is too large for me to do myself.
