Hi all,

I bought an extra mcb for my consumer unit to add an electric oven in kitchen. (Old one was gas).
I’d noted that the make of existing mcbs were Crabtree and when I googled was pleased to see that screwfix sold them.
Problem is the one I’ve bought has a metal tab sticking out the back however the ones in the consumer don’t. See pic
They’re both ‘Type B’, so not sure how to find the right version. What as I getting wrong?

Gas MCB's...aren't they a tad dangerous?

Joking aside, what is the part number of each MCB?

Yours is the older version. The ones with the tabs have been around for ten years or more

IIRC they are probably "starbreaker." It might be printed on your consumer unit.

If you read the part number off any of the old MCBs in your consumer unit, I think they can still be obtained through a proper Electrical wholesaler. If not, there are people who have stocks.

I might have a box of them somewhere.

THe metal tab is what releases the Mcb, its sometimes hard to see if its pushed in or behind a Busbar, virtually all Mcbs will have either a plastic or metal one, as without it the Mcb wont lock in
Crabtree often put the name of the range on the Consumer Unit cover

Damo, what model was your old breaker?
Can you post a pic of it?

That would help these guy best advise you.

When I see your old one and know the part no, I will have a look on my shelf.

Theres not an old one to see, only the ones still in use, he wants a new one to fit in a spare way for a new circuit.
A picture of the board or even the cover will likely solve the issue.

Thanks everyone, and sorry it’s taken me so long to reply.
The pic I posted was an example of the existing mcbs in use.
Looks like they’re the ‘loadstar’ Type as opposed to the star breaker which screwfix sell within the Crabtree range. I’m assuming the loadstar type are an older version. I’ve found one on eBay, only a few quid so should keep me going. Might get the entire consumer upgraded as part of the new kitchen fit. We’ve choose an induction hob which will defo need its own circuit. Rated at 11.1kw! Can I even get loadstar mcbs to cover such a load? Must be mega amps!
Thanks again for your help, I can always rely on good old diynot

I don't think Loadstar has a Domestic range.

The fact that yours has a screw terminal doesn't mean it is Loadstar. IMO it is more likely the older Starbreaker, which had a screw before the current style was introduced.

Please show us pics of your consumer unit, and a close-up of the front of one of your old MCBs showing any text and numbers on it. And any names or logos you can find.

Ahh JohnD, the plot thickens

I’ve just had the missus send me a front pic of the consumer (see attached).
The one I’ve on order is a 6MSB16 but seems it should have been a 6M1B16 darn it!
