DAB radio possessed by the devil, in the form of TalkSport

Some time ago our faithful FM portable radio finally broke apart, so it was time for a new kitchen radio. Welcome to the world of DAB, where sets cost twice as much, use three times as much electricity, and reception is four times worse (I know that doesn’t really make sense, but you get the meaning). We now have a Zennox Vintage, as sold by the Daily Telegraph.

The radio has a retro styled case, it’s quite sturdy and covered in a pleasant enough false leatherette. The controls move smoothly and all in all it isn’t badly constructed at all. The sound is boxy of course and has a strange background grumbling which fiddling with the aerial reduces a little. It’s not noticeable when listening to music and passable when listening to speech.

We only listen to Radio 3 and 4, and occasionally Classic FM, which are on presets. The set is on for many hours a day, more or less continuously unless we’re out, until the TV takes over in the evening.

The radio can be turned off and on during the day if we’re in the garden, or out etc. In the evening it’s turned off at the set, the power cord remaining plugged in and the set on standby. And here’s the whole point of this post.

When the radio is turned on at the set first thing in the morning, out blasts TalkSport radio at a fairly high volume. The previous night, at switch-off time, it is tuned to Radio 3 or 4. I would never listen to TalkSport radio if you paid me. There’s no preset for TalkSport. We use the presets to get back Radio 3 or 4, and carry on. The next day we have to do the same thing again. This TalkSport intrusion only happens on the first switch-on of the day. Why on earth is this happening? Is the set possessed? Do TalkSport own Zennox and it’s a devious plan to up their listener figures?

I seem to remember that if the power lead is disconnected overnight then the radio goes back to Radio 3 or 4 the next day, but that’s as big a faff as having to retune. I’ll have to test that again.

I knew DAB was a mistake.

And from a reputable brand like "Zennox" from the Daily Mail.*

I knew DAB was a mistake.

I don't think the mistake lies with DAB.

Do you see what I'm getting at?!

Send it back & get something else.

*Edit: Telegraph.

Well, irrespective of the pedigree of the set, I am curious what causes this behaviour, and why only overnight?.

We also have a Pure Elite Series 2 Stereo DAB portable, at an eye-watering £85, which has none of the faults of the Zennox but has the plummiest sound you could imagine, and then the outer case melted, a common problem on these sets.

A bit hard to say without knowing the architecture of the internals. The "last state" must be stored separately to the presets, otherwise you'd be loosing those too.

You say some time ago - how long have you had it? Has it always behaved like this? It may be as crude as a coin cell holding the IC's memory, similar to a PC BIOS.

That said, still unusual that it is doing it while still connected to the power source.

We have had the radio some time and it has always behaved like this. As far as I know there are no internal batteries.

Last night the radio was turned off around 6 pm as the TV took over. I turned the radio back on at midnight and it was still tuned to Radio 4. I turned the radio off and turned off the power at the wall socket.

This morning I turned on the power and the radio display showed Update for a few seconds then showed the time and date. I turned it on and it was tuned to Radio 4.

Something happens overnight when the radio has power. I can't find any evidence of anyone else with this problem. I'm baffled.

You're best off streaming it through the internet. Get a dock (lots of decent Bose second-hand docks around) and get something to stream radio stations through it. It can be a very tidy set up. I have a Bose SoundWave in the kitchen that I bought for about £40. It has AM/FM on it and if I want any other stations, I'll just Bluetooth the laptop or phone to it and can stream live.

I drive a lot of different hire cars through work and very rarely can I get consistently reliable signal through the DAB radios in them. As the signal waveband is either on or off, it tends to get very fussy/temperamental and will cut off regularly if the signal quality drops just a bit. At least with FM/AM/LW the signal is always there in varying quality. I don't even bother with DAB Radio a lot of the time.

In the early days of digital TV I remember a lot of issues with poor quality signals but I find it has cleared up considerably since the rollout. Not sure why DAB Radio is still so poor.

It may be doing a scheduled rescan of available channels at * o'clock in the morning or something & defaulting to Talksport afterwards. If so, the s/w developer didn't get it quite right.

You may be able to confirm this by forcing a rescan manually & seeing how it behaves after.

If you are otherwise happy with the set, just unplug it at night.

I can live with it, it's just a curiosity I'm er, curious about. Thanks for all the replies.

You could always chat to the mfr and see what they say?
