Hi,

I'm going to install a french drain into my garden to help improve drainage. From reading on the net I need to dig holes around 18 inches deep and 8 inches wide. The hole needs to have a slight decline to allow gravity to assist in the drainage. My question is when I put the gravel down ( 3 inches ) to set the perferated pipe onto, does it matter if this does not follow the decline. I imagine not but I just wanted to double check.

Another question is how much top soil is required to allow grass to grow.

Thanks

Steve

Better that the gravel base and pipe follow the decline of the hole so that the water will drain in that direction (assuming you have somewhere for the water to drain to :D). Recommend you use a pea/round gravel type rather than angular to ensure gaps remain for the water to drain through. Also good to place a permeable membrane in the hole bottom and sides to prevent soil creeping into the gravel and ultimately the pipe. Happy digging!
