What/How to render over painted Pebble Dash??

Hi all

I've got a bungalow that looks like it has a painted Pebble dash exterior. We have bricked up the middle of a large window to create two windows and added an extention that is made of block work so at the moment, we have mixed surfaces. We would like to modernise the overall look of the house so would like a flatter, coloured or painted render and might mix up some areas with some open joint rainscreen cladding.

What could we do to cover the painted pebble dash exterior? I'm guessing render wouldn't adhere to this painted finish?? At one point, we were considering an exterior insulation covering but not sure if we need this.....although I guess extra insulation is always good.

What would you do/advise?

Please forgive my ignorance....what sort of mesh and plug? Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to do this myself. My mate was/is a plasterer but prefers to do general building work so isn't up to date with modern plastering practises so I'm researching this more for him than me.....although I'll be his labourer.

Is this mesh quite rigid so when fixed to the wall, it's strong? I'm asking as my basic understanding is that the issue of rendering over an existing covered wall is getting a good bond with the material/paint. Initial research suggested EWI sheets (maybe 20mm??) fixed to the walls with adhesive and mechanical fixings followed by some kind of mesh coat/primer, mesh, another mesh coat and then final coloured render coat. But I'm looking at options available.

Theres loads of videos on u tube showing the procedure using either EML or fibreglass.

When I was in your situation, I bought a £70 'kango' from screwfix n chiselled the painted pebbledash off back to brick n then the plasterers applied the new render straight onto a surface that wouldn't give any possible problems 15 years down the line.

That is an option and I have a sds drill with chisel function. We had to remove a small chunk and it seemed really thin and well adhered hence why I asked the question. However, we have an extension across the back of the house so the rear wall is now an internal wall. I was going to hack the pebbledash off there and see how easy it comes off over a larger area. Depending how it goes will dictate what we do.
