So, over 40 years I've done plenty of house bashing and enough plastering to be able to do my own ceilings if they aren't bigger than 12 x 12 feet.

This time though, I had the luck to get a dollop right in the eye!.............jeez, that seized my eye up instantly. Eventually I got most out n give it a slight wash out. 12 hours later (3am Sunday morning), I had to go to hospital (pain tends to have that effect).

After 3hrs they saw me n told me that the Cornea was BURNT!!............PLASTER IS ALKALINE.... They had to wash away all the alkaline residue (there wasn't any plaster in there) to stop the burning getting worse still.

So there you go gang, it ain't the gritty bits.........it's the ALKALINE BURNING, so it's off to hospital every time. From now on I'll wear motocross goggles cos image ain't important and my eyeballs definately are!!

It really can be dangerous stuff. That's why you should NEVER stand directly under your trowel, and ALWAYS keep the back of the trowel clean.
Hope you get back to normal soon DIYedboy.

Warning duly noted.
I’ve managed to have plaster splash out onto my safety specs when I was mixing and also when washing out buckets too. Fortunately I had the specs on, so I was ok, but worth mentioning.

good to hear you are on the mend - nightmare if work/wages are threatened.pure nightmare.

as all above.
everythin in the builing trade is potentialy dangerous - everythin.
my worst experience with plaster was with lime putty gettin into every crack an tiny cut in my bare hands - it pained bad an then went septic.
i learned an have used barrier cream an gloves since.

"image aint important" tell that to the young guys at our place - one of them only puts his (expensive) gloves on when he goes off site for the dinnertime chips. he borrows my loaded tool belt, combs his hair an sets off to impress God nows who at the local chippie.
actuly, was it ever different?

I had never thought of plaster in the eye

I know cement burns csn be nasty. I know a screeder that when kneeling uses those gel knee pads -all fine until cement gets behind them and start getting tubbed in

Hi gang, it's been just over 3 days since I plastered my eye............it's healing nicely , isn't painful anymore n not so red. Foolishly, I thought only cement was naughty, over the years I've had grit etc etc in the eye without many problems, I thought washing out eyes was just to get out all the crunchy bits!

Boy have I learnt a lesson!! funnily enough I've worked alongside a few plasterers n none have worn goggles..........perhaps after a few months nothing ever whizzes off their trowels. I will never get that good...so it's motocross goggles for me (they fit the face waaaay more effectively than all the 'safety' goggles out there.

I definately won't be doing any Lime plastering after what you've just said!!!
