Hi Mods

I hope that this doesn’t contravene any forum rules and I’m not selling or promoting anything for myself. I have put it in the electrical section as I’m an electrician but would be grateful if you could share it forum wide

There is a growing problem with tradesmans vans being broken into and all their tools being stolen, which means they cannot work and make a living let alone the damage and distraction done to their van.

If the criminals get court and it goes to court then the most they get is a £80.00 fine.

If we can get enough signitures then the government have to listen and we can raise awareness and get tougher penalties imposed and stop this epidemic.

So I’m asking if all the forum members would follow the link below and sign the petition and get there friends and family to sign it too.

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/231177

Thanks

Lick this cable and tell me if its live
( a very very bad idea)
A friend once told me of an old electrician he know who would test for live with a light brush with a couple of wetted fingertips, and could detect the difference between phase-neutral and phase-phase in 3P situations.

I guess the old electrician isn’t around anymore lol

I probably should change my signature I wrote it a long time ago lol

We used to have a Mauritius guy about 40 years ago that would take a spark plug lead off of a running engine, put his finger in the lead, put his nose near the bonnet rod and the spark would jump from his nose to the bonnet rod. If you were unlucky, he would grab hold of you as you were passing.

I wonder if, in private, he ever used anything other than his nose?

Once caught they should get a hand cut off.

Twice caught the other hand cut off.

Thrice caught - the testicles.

Signed, even though I'm retired and don't have a van!
Lenient punishments don't work. Criminals laugh at them. The other problem is that we don't have a police force any more.

Signed for you, been victim few times.
Once chased them up road and they jumped in car got away, but found they had stashed tools in bush, ready for them to pick up later.
Once In daylight, Tesco car park, got number but apparently false plates.
Once in daylight, pub car park, whilst actually working on the lights in the same pub car park.
Once in daylight council car park
Plus a few other times.
As you say its Rife and more severe action needs taking, I did get a letter to attend an open day from the police of recovered gear but unfortunately none mine.
The amount of power tools was unreal, but what confused me was some had postcodes marked on in Permanent marker, so with a bit of effort i am sure the owners could have been traced.
I now put the firms postcode inside the battery housing, just in case, probably not a good idea to put your home postcode as the theirs may come to your house and nick your new replacement tools.

I applaud your optimism

but unless it is something the government wants to do, they will ignore it even if you get 700,000 supporters out on the streets.

Certainty of getting caught is a deterrent

The prospect of severe punishment isn't.

But Theresa will tell you, the number of police officers and PSOs has no effect on crime.

I get that, I haven’t set up the petition a fellow tradesperson has. I don’t know the guy personally but do follow him on Instagram so thought I would help get a few signitures.

We can at least try and make a change but likely just accept the fact that some criminals will just take what they want.

So it is often said.

But I'm not sure that the prospect of life imprisonment with a minimum term of 99 years might not make some people decide that stealing tools isn't worth it.

You might think so.

Studies have been carried out that show the human brain doesn't work this way.

Certainty works.

Severity doesn't

"If you smoke cigarettes then in twenty, forty or sixty years time you may die a horrible and lingering death from cancer or emphysema"
Doesn't work.

"If you smoke at work, you will lose your job. If you smoke in a pub or restaurant, you will be thrown out"
Works.

"If you don't wear a crash helmet, you may be killed or suffer horrible brain damage and have to be fed and changed for the rest of your life"
Doesn't work.

"If you don't wear a crash helmet, you will be fined"
Works.

"If you steal tools from a van, the 99 times out of a hundred, you will not be caught. If you are caught, the 80 times out of a hundred you will just get a caution. If you go to court, 50-50 you will get off. If you are found guilty, you will probably get a fine or suspended sentence. If you go to prison it might be for 99 years"
Doesn't work.

Can any prison sentence be worse that a long and lingering death from lung cancer, while crippled from emphysema, unable to climb stairs or earn a living, and unable to walk to the toilet unaided? But it didn't stop people smoking. In some countries people don't wear seatbelts.

It will never happen to me.
