If you were fleeing a country, whether persecution, poverty, starvation, war, disease, whatever, would you not prefer to go to a country of your choosing, once you had reached a place of safety?

There are other reasons. But I wouldn't boil it down to the tropes of free stuff and easy system - neither of which is supported by facts.

We need a better approach - simply returning them to France won't be cost effective, it should be a fast track processing and then return to country of origin.

These people are not asylum seekers, they are attemping illegal immigrants coming to our country to take advantage of our "high trust society" and knowing that we are a soft touch. They come to work in the black economy, claim benefits, harass and rape our women and mock our police. They know that they will be welcomed and protected by our soppy liberal establishment. There are proper channels for asylum seeking and the English Channel is not one of them. They are effectively invaders and should be treated as such - repel them with force, lethal force if necessary. They will stop coming.

Drop em back where they came from yes. Lethal force?? Nah. Talk like that feeds the Himmis of this world and gains them support.

One only has to read the stories of refugees fleeing war zones, etc to understand their plight.
It is often a choice between dying (as collateral damage, starvation, etc) at home, or risking a perilous journey with only a small chance of success.
Of course, the migrants in EU are no longer at risk, but they probably were at their original point of departure.

Going back to Motman's point, what is needed is a coordinated effort, from all EU member states, rather than the current "it's not our problem" approach.

If they are so desperate why don't they stay in the EU mainland.
If the world's most desperate don't want to live in Europe why should the British.
 
According to the UN charter for refugees, a refugee is supposed to claim refugee status in the first safe country they come to.
If they don't they then lose the right to claim asylum.
As these latest arrivels are Iranian then they should have been claiming asylum in some country in the middle East.

"Country of your choosing" your having a laugh are you not.
Once refugees have reached a place of safety that is the end of the worlds obligation to help them, if they want to go to a country of their choosing they have to go through the proper channels (and not the English channel) like everyone else
