2 garage openings, one at 3.75m and the other is 4.8m. Im pricing up the lintels this week but dont know wether to go for concrete, rsjs or catnicks. On wicks site, the catnicks look not to expensive but how do they fair against a rsjs in price. Concrete will come in cheaper but in 2 minds will these be efficient. Have worked on garages with double and triple 3inch concrete lintels and never had any issues. ISnt there thicker concrete lintels on the market. If so, is there a limit to their height?

There is no limit to concrete lintel's height, but a limit to what the shelves at Jewsons will hold.

Have your forgotten about timber on purpose?

A timber lintel, wouldnt put one in. I was thinking of getting a concrete lintel made up. maybe 12x4 with lots of steel rebar in it.

If there's nowt above the openings except a few blocks and the roof, timber will be fine.
Concrete is v heavy, might need a genie or 2. Pricing lintels from DIY sheds isn't clever, Birtley's is online & once you select your required lintel (by performance not price) you can usually beat that price thru local or web merchants

Itll be a trussed roof and the gables will be 2.8m high with an 8m span. Im sure doubling up on concrete lintels should do however i could go with 10x4 steel rsjs. ISnt it just a case of building the rsjs in rather than bolting them. If needing bolted then will do. I remember a job i was on some 15 year ago where there was a bolt between the 2 but forget what this is for. Anyone enlighten me on why this was and is it regs to do with all a double skinned rsjs,

Bolting them would be the equivalent of using ties when building a cavity wall.

I take it you're not bothering with building regs on this build then? Have you calculated what load (in Newtons) the lintels will be carrying- that'll be the weight of the blocks above x 10 and an element of the roof dead weight and snow load (depends which wall your doors are in- gable end or face).

YEs ill be building to building regs but dont have an engineer on it anymore. Wanting to keep the costs down. If it comes to it, ill install a 10 or 12x 4. Thatll be a strong rsj for it im sure.

OK. If Building Control are involved and there's any significant load on the lintels they'll want calculations for any solution that isn't a manufactured lintel with a spec sheet. Best bet- talk to your bco, see if he/she will offer an opinion (I've had several successes with this method)
