Hi

We have an old fashioned Ideal Boiler which works perfectly well, it has a red expansion valve. The hot water goes into a copper cylinder tank and the radiators are usually fine.

Some of the rads havent been heating properly at the top. Have tried bleeding excess air but water only comes out. Now the rads are hardly heating at all.

Looking at pressure gauges, I think they have dropped too much. In April of last year the black needle was about 1.5 bar. Could this be beacause of bleeding the radiators when not necessary.

I've attached a picture of the dials. Any advice welcome.

Yes you need to top up system pressure via filling loop.
Set to about 1.2 bar when system is cold.

If not sure what this is then google filling loop and topping up boiler pressure to see what I mean.

Thank you. Would the pressure have dropped through bleeding the radiators? The last time the system was pressurised was end of April last year.

The expansion vessel was replaced at the end of April last year. What should the pressure be?

To get your heating back working, I would just top up for now.

When the heating is on and system hot, check if much movement on the gauge again, if it has risen considerably then there may be an issue with vessel needing recharged. You can top up until this gets looked at but don’t just keep topping up, get it looked at if rises

For a usual 2 or 3 storey house check the pressure is just under 1 bar. Vessels should be checked and topped up every year.

No disrespect to poster, but it’s unlikely they are going to know how to check an expansion vessel properly when they aren’t sure how to top up pressure. Please dont take that the wrong way @H0llies

By all means have a go if you feel confident, can find info on how to do it on the faq page on here or online.

I would leave it to someone who knows what they are doing though or you may end up with a costly repair having to replace prv etc if used to release pressure to test vessel.

I do know how to pressurise a boiler, albeit not this one as I can't see any filling loop :( I have boiler and system cover so I am interested to know if there is a reading I should be concerned about on the valve for the expansion vessel. I don't believe represurising the system is covered in my policy, but if there is a fault with the expansion vessel - that would be covered. I know when to leave something to the professionals.

I know when to leave something to the professionals.

Who, in thos case, are the "professionals"? With whom is the service contract - do you have to pay a call out fee or excess?

I have a contract with Homeserve. There is a monthly fee - was £20 per month with a £50 call out fee. Had one call out last year, first in three years and they had to change the expansion vessel. At the end of this month, they are putting the cost up to £35 pm plus the £50 call out fee.

There is no filling loop on this boiler, will post pics later to see if anyone can tell me how to repressurise.
