My mother has the above model in her flat using it for hot water only.
I called someone out recently to do a service on it. Before taking the front cover off he said ' I don't like the look of that'.
when the cover was removed he said that there was some rust round the burner area and he wouldn't be able to carry out the service, To sort it out would cost £2900 + vat which included replacing the whole unit.
So I thanked him and he left.
I contacted J& S and a new hex is only about £300 , If that were to be changed does it open a can of worms that could lead to more bits need replacing? in other words is the price quoted about right for replacing the whole unit? any thought would be handy
Thanks

Would get someone else out who knows what they are doing. Guys that have warm air ticket are more likely to have worked on Janus water heaters.

This guy reckoned that he had done J&S all his life and fitted the units in all the flats (where my mother lives) back in the 80's.

The janus is a very simple unit but absolutely imperative that it is properly serviced every year, they soot up like mad if not done properly

Is this on a warm air unit?. Not sure what rusts around the burner as it’s suspended in mid air!. The flues rot and the heat exchanger fins corrode away but I’m struggling to visualise the issue you have unless it’s a completely different housing to what I’m thinking

Hi Ollski
Thanks, yes it is on a warm air unit but she doesn't use the warm air, just uses it for heating the water. I think that the bloke was only interested in replacing the whole unit but I am sure that £2900 + vat is way too much anyway, I am a bit reluctant to get someone else in now, as u probably know its not easy finding someone that specialises in warm air units these days. At least it seems to work OK.

Well if he didn’t turn it off then there can’t have been any safety issues with it. Do get it serviced though, as Ianmcd said above they block and need washing through regularly.
