The blue wire is connected to an electric aerial, which automatically extends when the set is switched on.
Sorry I can't help with the other query!
John :)

ok ta, i dont have an electrical aerial on my mk6 golf, but what is the black box ? wonder if its in inline amp for radio signal boost

Googling such a device and there is a similarity - but I've no idea of how they work or indeed if they are any good. Sorry I cant help! I just leave my car radio or whatever standard - must be getting old!

Blue wire usually tells you it's connected to 12 volts when the radio is turned on, used to be mainly for electric aerials etc.
I would guess its an amplifier or filter of some sort, needs connecting to the relavent output on the new stereo.

yes blue wire provides 12v to electrical aerial, but since i dont have an electric aerial it supplies 12v to the inline amp which which appaerntly what the black box is, so ive been told ....anyway i jpoined the two blue wires together , ie from back of headunit to the one on the amp and i havnt noticed anu difference in the fm signal reception...might try another one..

I upgraded the stereo on an Audi A3 many years ago (similar setup to the Golf) and had to upgrade the aerial connection - it was 1 of 2 parts which sits in the tailgate behind the plastic trims either side of the window
