No such person as google.

it's just one person, qualifications unknown, offering an opinion on the interweb, and google has found and offered you a link to read the opinion.

original chargers supplied by the manufacturer of your phone are likely to be built to a good specification and passed through quality control checks. If a good manufacturer isues a faulty or dangerous product they will normally be required to recall and replace it. I use Samsung ones for my phone and tablet.

There are unbranded and counterfeit ones sold on ebay, amazon and market stalls that may not have these safeguards, and when you hear of a house fire or a person being electrocuted in the bath, it's usually such a cheap rubbish product involved.

My car turns off the power to the sockets when the ignition is off, and actually has different ones for chargers which are intended for long periods of use (unlike a fag lighter which only draws current for ten seconds or so).

I'm referring to a plug-in charger with USB output 5v 1A on sale at the local Pound Shop

Im assuming that it wouldn’t be as good quality as the one costing £20 or more in the Apple store nor gone through any kind of rigorous testing.

I wouldn't trust any £1.00 Chinese electrical thing - even a vibrator:unsure:

Isn't all it's doing is dropping from 12 to 5v ?

No. it is converting 12 volts to 5 volts.

If it was "dropping" the voltage using a resistor the the resistor would be getting hot. A seven volt drop with 1 amp being supplied would mean the resistor would be disipating 5 watts of power as heat.

It always amazes me how people will spend many hundreds of pounds on the latest iphone etc. then go and buy the charger and/or covers from poundland.

Because Apple accessory prices are a rip off?
Apple USB-C multi connector £69
Alternative brand £11 and thats without choosing dodgy Chinese imports.

Shopping wisely at Poundland otl. can be fruitful, that's why these shops are usually full of shoppers!
