Hi,

Historically I have seen plywood used to sheet in a shower enclosure (stud walls).

I was told by my tile supplier that the building regulations now require a tile backer board for stud walls in showers.

Is this correct?

Just want to ensure he isn't trying it on.

I guess it is a better job and may go for it any way - just wanted to understand if the regs require it.

Thanks

A tile backer board under building regs? Not heard of that. Does he know which Building Reg Document that's in?

Building regs doesn't cover tiling.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think to ask. I will try and call him next week.

Could be a general 'materials shall be designed for and fit for their purported use' type catchall clause. Good quality ply in a shower would probably be fine, shuttering ply might well deteriorate with the leach through the tiles (tiles aren't waterproof). Backing board is probably cheaper than decent ply anyway :)

Never use ply under tiles in a shower - you will regret it. Movement due to both humidity and temperature will break the grout and then it's the end.

backer board is brilliant for showers.
very strong.
moisture resistant.
great surface for adhesion of tiles.
You woulnt regrette using it.
