Hi,

The pvc window in our bathroom has a draft comibg through as it no longer fits snugly. Looking back on here it sounds like we need to replace the hinges, but I just wanted to check first!

The handle has never really properly closed either, the photo shows as far as it goes.

Any advice gladly welcomed.
Thanks!

Is the gap the hinge side? If so its a hinge issue . If the gap is the lock side then its a good chance its the lock thats faulty. Does the handle work when the window is open?

Looking at your pictures , it looks like the gap is the lock side. Just check how well the corner ' weld ' on the sash and the frame line up . If they line up I would be looking at the lock, if not then it could be the hinges ( I have seen much worse looking still work correctly , but also seen better looking fail! ) , or it could need ' toe and heeling ' . If that handle operates the lock when the window is opened , then there is an issue with lining up with the keeps , which would certainly require adjustment ( and maybe new hinges ) BUT if the handle/lock is not working correctly when the window is opened , then I think you will find the issue is probably the locking mechanism , or keeps

Hi ronniecabers,
Thanks so much for replying-it is indeed the lock side, and no the lock doesn't work when it's open so looks like it's that. Glad I checked! Is that something we could replace ourselves or is it too complicated?
Thanks

It is fairly simple to replace the lock bit the biggest problem is getting the correct lock! Your best bet , if you can , is unscrew the handle and remove it and then unscrew the lock from the window sash. Depending on how rusty the screws are with depend on how easy it is to remove. If you get it removed then measure it's length and its backset ( distance from face of lock to centre of hole where handle spindle goes into the lock.) .There may be a visible name printed on it . I would then , either post a picture up on here , or look though the likes of eBay for uPVC window locks and see if you can find the one you want. Whilst the lock is out , you could reattach the handle band pull the window closed just to check it does close fully and that you haven't got another issue.
The only issues I forsee are good access and the possibility of it being a National Companies lock as those locks aren't generally available ( especially Anglian and Everest ) but there are ways around it

Thank you so much, I'll have a go at removing it tonight and I'm sure I'll be back! Much appreciated

Hi, we removed the lock which does close when it's out but it's stiff. The problem is that the locking mechanism on the outside of the window doesn't move at all with the handle.
We looked but couldn't see an easy way of removing it, it's partly covered by plastic. Is it still possible for us to fix it or is replacing the locking mechanism complicated?
Thanks

Could anyone advise me on how easy/hard it is to replace the latch locking mechanism please? The bolt still moves up and down at the top but the latch on the side doesn't move. Thanks
