I am considering the Excelsior WXI unvented water heater by Fabdec. Is it any good? One attraction to me as a user is that it has a self sustaining air gap i.e. no requirement to recharge. This technology is unique to this manufacturer as far as I am aware.

The manufacturers have told me that no annual service is required other than a visual check of the t & p valve.

The cylinder will be heated indirectly by our Worcester Bosch Greenstar 18 Ri. Which is 18 Kw.

This follows on from my post last week regarding Advance Appliances thermal stores, as I have now identified a feasible discharge pipe route, so I could replace my thermal store with an unvented cylinder if I wish. Just need to choose which one.

Thank you in advance for your opinions.

We specify mainly Fabdec in my firm.

They make cylinders for some other well known manufacturers, they were the manufacturers of the Megaflo in the first decade of production. Furthermore they were the designer and the patent holder for the Megaflo floating baffle.

I’m fed up with replacing failed expansion vessels; this design is genius.

Simon, Thanks so much for your response, thats comforting to know Fabdec pioneering involvement in the Megaflo. I didn't know that. The USP of the Fabdec is the self sustaining air gap, but obviously I didn't want to base my decision on that alone. If the Fabdec is equal to the Megaflo in most other aspects I will probably go with the Fabdec.

How do you rate overall quality, performance, reliability, availability of spare parts etc compared to the Megaflo? Also, Fabdec after service (ie if a plumber needs to contact Fabdec to advise on a technical or fault finding issue). Do Fabdec have a network of plumbers if my local plumber is unable to fix a fault?

The Megaflo is the other one I am considering. What is your experience of these? Do you get many call outs to these? I spoke to a manager at an internet plumbing supply company yesterday & he waxed lyrical about the Megaflo saying it was the Rolls Royce of unvented cylinders. He also mentioned the Baxi backed after sales service (I have no intention of taking out a service contract but I suppose that is comforting to know if my local plumber cant fix a fault that I can call on them if needs be - at a big price I know).

I can get the Fabdec 215 litre for approx £200 less than the Megaflo 210 litre which is to be considered too.

Thank you in anticipation of any further comments from you or anyone else out there.
