Hello,

I'm hoping for some advice regarding the internal doors that are present within my new build property.

They are described as "Oak Finish" which I believe are laminate or vinyl (I don't know how to tell). They are quite light and are clearly MDF or similar inside, but appear to have a genuine Oak pattern on the outside. I've attached an image or the door and one from the top to show how it's made up.

I don't really like the Oak colour and would love to varnish or stain them a Grey wash similar to the attached image, but I'm assuming I'll need to sand them down first.

Is this possible for a laminate door or am I wasting my time?
If I am able, what sort of stain or paint do I need to get?

Thanks in advance!

Mark

They look veneered to me. They may have been finished with lacquer which may limit what you can do, and I do not have a clue if you could achieve the finish you want as that would need the grain of the veneer (assuming you have veneer) to be as raw as possible. :(

I suspect it will be oak veneer, the inside looks like it's thicker, but I reckon it's a thicker oak strip at the top and maybe the bottom.

If it's veneer (more than likely) it won't be much thicker than paper... you can sand the finish off it, just don't be heavy handed, then you can stain in grey/black and varnish again.

Thanks for the replies and for the steer on them being veneer. I actually have a spare door as we removed one from the hallway into the lounge. I might give sanding a go and see how I get on with a stain.

Have also read about gel-based stains for this sort of thing - any they any good?
