boiler sounded like chugging then stopped working

Are you 100% sure the condensate pipework is not blocked....chugging sounds as so many have mentioned are consistant with a flooded sump.
And a boiler being off for such a long time may have allowed the condensate pipework to have drained.

Ok thanks Ian I will be back onto the insurance company tomorrow, am i ok leaving it on tonight with a bowl under the dripping part or should i turn the boiler off ?

sorry didnt see the next post, I dont know enough about it to know if the condensate pipe is blocked or not. When the engineer came out first he told me he cleared the condensate and trap if that sounds right

Clearing the trapis not the same as making sure that the condensate run is not blocked, certainly sounds like that is your problem

If you can disconnect the pipe from the trap outlet and pour water down it, that will tell you if it's blocked. Or if you can access the other end of the pipe try blowing up it.

Yes he used his multi-metre and said the resistance on the fan was reading 9 and didn't know if that was good and would check with WB. When he came back the next time he told me 9 meant it was bad and should be closer to 300 as told to him by WB, He was also told remove orange wire and do something ( sorry cant remember that bit) and if fan started it was not the fan. He did all this and said it will be the valve. When he comes back today I will mention the pump etc, I cant check that as the boiler is not working at all but will get the traps etc checked. The reset when it first stopped I did try a reset and it tried to start and then nothing, further resets did nothing. So far he has changed the following:
fan, wiring loom, gas valve and today it's the board.
Thanks everyone for all the advice so far, if he does manage to fix it I will make sure i put the reason on the post.

Can't believe we're on page 3 when the simplest thing was suggested on page 1, twice, hasn't been checked.

The engineer told me he emptied the trap / condensate so I can only believe him on that one, after the suggestions on page one i commented on them and was told he had done it. As for taking it off and blowing up it, it runs down into the washing machine trap so cant do that I will try and remove the top part and pour water down it. But this does not run outside the house so dont expect it to be frozen but will also check. Have just left a message for plumber to call me back.

washing machine traps are terrible for blocking condensate pipes all the powder builds up and blocks the pipe

I have today just had another engineer come out, they could not reach the first chap. And apparently gas engineers are difficult to find in kent. This chap came out i was at work but had left my wife instructions to ask if he could check the condensate pipe and or trap. He said he was in the process of doing that but could not blow down it and it was completly blocked. Ianmcd exactly as you and other have said all along, i am glad though i didnt try to resolve myself as my insurance would have not been valid and would not get anything back. This engineer also said he doubted it needed any parts at all looking at the state of the pipe.
