Moving the main supply cable

What does that involve please?
It involves you actually getting the DNO to come and look at the job and give you a proper quote. I don't know whether they will automatically identify the contestable and non-contestable elements - won't hurt to ask them to.

Can someone explain that earthing arrangement to me - it appears to be a combination of TN-S and TN-C-S? If previous TN-S had been converted to TN-C-S, I would have expected them to remove (or, at least, not use) the connection to the cable sheath - not connect it the apparent TN-C-S earth.

Kind Regards, John

I can’t see a PME label so it might be a DIY conversion.

Often my DNO do this on failed TN-S supplies. It becomes a TN-C-S supply and the cable sheath is earthed at the cutout end by the TN-C-S to protect the cable up to wherever the sheath has lost its connection.

If this connection to the sheath were not installed by the DNO then the electrician would still need to install it as the cable will be an extraneous conductive part and require bonding anyway.

Hi there - good to see you! Yes, that makes sense. I was thinking that if they did the conversion, they would disconnect the cable sheath, but as you go on to remind me ...

... which, of course, is very true!

@symbiosis I guess the box below the meter (is that the consumer unit?) will also move?
How would you go about that? If it is the consumer unit, there will be a lot of cables to move, re-run, extend....

Thanks John. I haven’t been around much recently I’ve been stuck working down south for the last 6 months (n)

You should have dropped in - I'm sort-of 'down south' :) It that situation ongoing, or are you now back 'up north'?

Kind Regards, John

Yep to all, it is indeed the CU and it will also need moving by my sparkies.

I'm not electrician and this could be extremely dangerous and so im in no way advising that this is done.....

But as I see it.... Would it be safe to disconnect the tails whilst everything else is still connected. Then unscrewing the wooden board from the wall, moving everything in place and then getting the electrician to also move the CU and extend any cables.....?

NO

this could be extremely dangerous

could you explain at all?

I no longer have the photo of the damage caused by a DIY move of a DNO cutout and cable. As the cable was being moved ( and bent ) the insulation failed and the cable shorted. The arc created burnt for several minutes before the fuse at the substation finally blew. More than a foot of cable was vapourised.

The fuse was at least 200 amps which meant about 50 kW of heat being generated in the arc at the end of the cable

Wow - Definitely don't do this in that case!!!!
