PIR sensor for light that will go on / off after several seconds of activity?

Is it possible to get a PIR sensor which will set off a light after say 10 seconds of movement in the sensors range?

I wanted to get a PIR light to extend to the pavement, but only go off if say someone was loitering outside, trying to break into cars etc parked roadside, not go on and off as someone is just walking by

Such a thing could certainly be engineered, but I have not personally seen one commercially available. Maybe others here will have done.

People 'loitering' would only activate a PIR if their loitering involved an appreciable amount of movement across the detection zone of the PIR. If they were relatively stationary (e.g. whilst fiddling with a car door), it would be quite possible that it would not get activated.

You might also want to consider the fact that, particularity if the area is poorly lit, people trying to break into cars might welcome some light to help them see what they were doing!

There's far too much decision making in that scenario for a cheap off the shelf PIR lamp. You might be able to achieve the effect using burglar alarm PIRs set to double knock with external interfacing to the light or CCTV with zone mapping and external interface ports but it would need a lot of setting up, you're deep into privacy implications (surveilling public footpaths) and what are you trying to prevent/achieve? Most pondlife are either aware of PIR/CCTV cover so dress appropriately or they're smacked off their heads and desperate so will do what they're doing unless someone or something (a large copper or a big fence) physically prevents them from doing it.

In front of a Hotel (not a 24 hour reception). A pick Up had the window smashed and sat nav taken at 2am the other night, the cctv catches it (yes there are signs) and shows them having a go at another builders van window unsuccessfully then cycle off. It's happened before, maybe even the same idiot

i was thinking if the area lit up, for one the cctv would get a better image than it does in night mode (its a decent 5MP hikvision turret), but also it would deter anyone from hanging around as its drawn attention to them loitering around.

Nice theory but if no-one is there to be alerted to them hanging around then what's the point? Not sure what the deal would be with illuminating a public footpath- best bet might be throw an LED flood at it (carefully masked to not dazzle drivers/pedestrians and not shining in windows across the street) and leave it on all night- at 10w it'll hardly break the bank and it'll sharpen up the rez on the CCTV images. If the council moan then ask them what alternatives they can suggest

That's true, 10W on 24/7, all year, would cost 0.01kW*24h*365d*£0.15=£13.14

But, I don't think that's bright enough. I have an 8W LED PIR out the front and my cameras never switch back to 'day mode' when it's on. It's just the right amount of light for me, not dazzling or retina-burning bright like some, but if it's for CCTV purposes, then that's what you'll need I think.

Thanks to all. I suppose the other thing to come to mind is a talking pir motion sensor on timer between midnight and 6am to say about cctv being in operation..

I guess it would put someone off hearing a voice, downsides it would trigger with the odd person passing in the early hours, and it won't put off someone high on drugs

Nah. Waste of time and effort, if i knew there was an auto talking pir on a public footpath i'd be triggering it for fun and nuisance value. If this is a frequent problem then sort some off street parking for your guests or pay for the only thing that will stop them- a night porter with a big flask of coffee, a dog and a pointy stick

fair point. There is a big car park locked at night, 2.8m height restricted archway so nearly everything gets under. To be fair it is their own fault leaving valuables out, or not parking in the car park. one side of the road heading towards town has the weirdos, just trying to do our best for the tradesmen staying. Maybe some notices about leaving valuables in view will help and is the simplest solution then

Yep. Very depressing living in a world where you have to hide things in case some wandering lowlife takes a fancy to it (or more annoyingly wrecks the doors on your van to see if you really have removed all the tools) but that's where we are at the moment.
