Not sure of the correct terminology, but yesterday this piece circled fell off..

I presume it bends around the gutter so that any toilet-related fumes go up into the air and not under the roof into the attic.

How urgent of a problem is this, or is it not even a problem at all - I had a walk around the block and at least 10 other houses just have the pipe ending under the roof so must have had their S-piece fallen off as well.

Could be asbestos with those big collars on.

It’s not urgent. Mine ends at the junction where the toilet joins, it’s on the to do list.

Here's a house 5 doors down...

That was from a streetview image 10 years ago, and it's still like that today, so I guess I don't need to worry. I counted at least 10 other houses like this, so I guess snapping at that joint is a common problem 50 years on...

2 caveats : 1 they don't hit anyone, 2 no one knows it's asbestos/cement:eek:

It's a good job it didn't hit anyone, I could hardly lift the piece that fell off it was that heavy.

It's asbestos cement.
once had the job of replacing all the asbestos cement soil pipes on a council estate after a few swan neck bends parted company. They were described as an accident waiting to happen (n).

chrisw99 If there are no foul smells in your loft,it can be left alone (y)

AFAIR the pipe should rise 0.9m above any window height if within 3m of a window.
I'd be more concerned at the amount of steam that can rise out of the pipe during showering/bathing and it's effect on the roof timbers.

The bath/sink waste don't go into the soil pipe, they go into a hopper inside the garage and then down into a drain several feet from where the soil pipe goes underground. The only thing entering this pipe is the toilet.

But I will keep an eye on it next time a hot bath is being drained - most of the steam comes out of the hopper inside my garage :(

Just noticed on the streetview image from 5 doors down, you can actually see the bit of soil pipe that fell off still on the garage roof ...

So when the regulations say within 3m of a window, is that on the same wall face or does the bathroom window on the front count?
