Probably answered my own question here but thought I would ask.

I am renovating my kitchen and will need to remove my gas hob to have a new worktop fitted. IT is going back as it was before then.

Am I right in thinking I cannot touch any of this and will need a certified gas man in?

Thanks

You are correct gas needs a gas safe engineer. I would always ask someone saying they will do this work for you also for their gas safe number and check it on the gas safe website.

Perfect, thought as much. Is that for both disconnecting and reconnecting? Or can I just use stop valve and have one come in for connecting up?

Thanks for replying.

Isnt the connection designed to be disconnected by non gas approved person?

just wondering...

Assuming that the hob's gas supply has a valve, is it an offence to disconnect the hob once the valve has been closed? I appreciate that fitting the new hob requires a gas Safe plumber.

edit-----------

I guess given that the regs say that you have to cap the supply that requires you to be "competent".

hypothetically if you was to use the valve and remove the hob yourself, then call in a gas man to fit it when worktop ready, nobody is going to complain?

But to temporarily cap it you need to be "competent". AFAIK you need to be registered as Gas Safe . Unfortunately, proving that you are "competent" might be difficult if you found yourself in court.

Surely if you did it yourself and you were prosecuted in court, it would be for them to prove you were incompetent, not the other way round?

The smoking ruin of the house might help them to decide on that!;);)

Personally I've always used the theory that I can work on any devices in the house but gas. Electricity is basically my job and water is essentially harmless. Gas is easy to not see a problem and find yourself having to try and convince your insurance company to pay up for a new house!

I can remember the one I quoted as it is in my part of the world, but there was another one where a newer house blew-up and demolished something like 3 or 4 adjacent houses (which I cannot find) but where the perpretrator got hard time for his misdemeanours
