In another post on this forum I mentioned that I would be soon taking down the very aged hardboard ceiling in our cellar which is nailed directly onto the floor joists of the room above. The void between ceiling skin and floorboards above has no insualtion or sound deadening material at all. As the cellar is a cold space with no heating then I would have thought it best to prevent draughts and unnecessary heat loss so I was going to insulate that void with something.

Using the likes of Kingspan cut to width to go between the joists is going to be quite expensive as I recall them doing so on our recent house extension so whilst something is better than nothing, can I use the old skool type of loft insulation that comes on a roll or is this only to be used in loft spaces??

TIA

Ian

Semi rigid rockwool [sound insulation] is easier to fit under floor and does both jobs.

That's quite interesting especially the lengths that he went to previously only to turn round and confess it was a waste of time.

Although I dont think he specified, it looks like 100mm being used in the video which could work out quite expensive so the 50mm pack may be an option. Something is better than nothing!!

There is a measured benefit to 50mm of Rockwool insulation even by their own standards. My initial idea of insulation was not focused on creating a sound barrier but more of a thermal one. In that case then it cannot be a waste of effort, just which is more effective.

Not cost effective so a waste of time .

If I were you I'd use 200mm loft insulation roll, hung in garden netting, stapled to the joists.

Are you planning to replace the cellar ceiling? If not, then I'd think you'd also want to do something about potential draughty floor above

Yes once the cables are tidy then I will insulate and reinstate the ceiling - better than the hardboard currently in place.

Thanks for the suggestion
