This baton on the bed split. I just screwed through it, should I have cut it off and put a new bit on?

You could force wood glue into the crack and then clamp it until it sets, then pilot drill and screw to the frame.

If you replace the whole batten, pilot drill the holes first or you might split the wood again.

Blup

Fine, cut the relevant part off, same process applies. You could use smaller size screws to minimise risk of splitting further

Cheap timber , seen it happen before , should be fine as is or stick a bit of pva in there and secure with a couple of screws.
Some are secured at ends only other are all screwed , depends on manufacturers design .

screw and glue a bit off 2x1"planed under the cracked section but dont rely on the glue to do to much as the wood has been coated with something

I went out looking at new beds yesterday, they are now made of such cheap crappy materials that I will not be getting a new bed unless I want to spend way way more money.
1/4" slats held by plastic end pieces that fit onto something that feels about 1/4" thick - no ta.
Methinks I'll stick with my existing bed frame & just replace the mattress.
