It's probably best not to dwell on it all too much, rightly or wrongly we've all been given some time so might as well make the most of it.

... if there is a god, he is cruel bastard and isn't worthy of any worship whatsoever.

I don't believe in God as most religions do. I do think there is some sort of creator, but it (or he) is not good or bad - it is morally neutral. Morality and immorality are created by man. Being moral is harder than being immoral, but it is better. It requires community effort; hence the world of Christianity.

My neighbour is very religious ;) in the summer months when she leaves the window open at night you can hear her

Praising God ;) .she will repeat "Oh my God"
Don't stop

Generally comes to an end when her old man gives out a grunt

it might be funny now, but trust me it is no a laughing matter.
I guess Muslim might watch that and would believe they are right, not Christians.

The difficulty with religion is that it creates division. By definition if a Christian believes his path is the right one, he must believe otger religions are wrong.

I honestly dont know how that circle can be squared.

I was in a discussion once with a few people of differing religions. I said your final destination is the same - we all die so does it matter how we get there?

They said the destination isnt important its the journey.

Education.
Many years ago I had a girlfriend whose family were devout Baptists as was she.

She went to Cambridge uni, her social circle were all baptists.

Confirmation bias doesnt seem to trump education

In general terms though it has been shown that the growth of science corresponds to an increase in secularism.
