Hello all,

Looking for a bit of guidance if I can please.

We have an ideal classic ff250. It was installed when the house was new in 97 so is pushing 22 years old. We bought this house 5 years ago and in that time have only had a seized fan.

Now, we are due to have a small extension built shortly and we are expecting the plumber to come up and assess our heating system. My issue is the last plumber who came wanted to rip out the boiler and replace it (despite only being a siezed fan). On the grounds that it is old and iffecient. I can maybe see his point but I’m always wary to replace anything that works.

Now based on the stelrad radiator information I calculate our current system to be at around 30000 btu for all our radiators. The same spreadsheet also calculated it in watts which comes in at 8756 watts. I don’t know exactly yet but based on a few calculations I think I need a radiator in the extension of around 6000btu which is around 1800watts. This should take me up to around 10500 watts.

Now my boiler I believe is rated between 11.7kw and 14kw.

Do you guys think it is up to the job? I appreciate its old and not efficient, also appreciate time and age might have reduced its output. But apart from a seized fan it seems to chug along nicely with no issues.

I fear the plumber may want it replacing based on age etc, but if it’s up to it I’d rather hang on for a few more years.

What do you think?

Its up to the job. Unless you need to move the boiler or have another pressing need to alter the type of system you have, I'd keep the classic. I service loads and apart from replacement fan every decade or so nothing much goes wrong. A new boiler would be more efficient but the amount you'd save is tiny compared to the cost of replacement. While parts are still available, don't change.

Build your extension and if it’s not up to coping with the heating demand, then change it.

very reliable boilers, I would stick with it if it was me , probably the most reliable boiler they ever made

Space Saver and Hideaway take that badge for me. I’ve been saving them up giving them a wipe over a fitting them as new for years.

Sounds like it's more than up to the job, and as above they're excellent boilers. Keep it

Thanks everyone. Pretty much what I hoped to hear. After the last guy wanting to rip it out I guess it made me think everyone would think the same.

Nice to know someone built something to last!!
