Galaxy G2-20 PIR Problem

I have a Honeywell Galaxy 2-20 alarm with wireless PIRs. It has been working perfectly with no issues, but recently it has developed a fault that I hope someone can help resolve.

Now when I enter my code and press A/> to set the unit before going out the unit/speakers give the noise as usual but when I leave I do not hear the three beeps to indicate the alarm has been set to active. The noise just continued uninterrupted until I cancel with Esc.

The batteries in the PIRs are all working well (checked voltage with multimeter) and the PIRs appear to be working. I have restarted the Galaxy unit but the problem still persists.

I have the engineer’s code and done the following:

- Restarted the unit (51 | 17) but the problem persists

- Checked if the wireless fobs (TCB800m) work. On pressing the Full/Part set buttons no signal is picked up & recognised by the Galaxy unit

- Checked the reading strength for the detectors (menu 21 | go to zone | #). The readings were all 0/0

- PIRs are still linked to (registered on) the unit (checked 52 | 5 |1 (Serial number)). I cleared one PIR serial number and created a tamper to automatically reconnect the PIR using (52 | 5 | select zone | *) but the unit does not recognise the PIR serial number

- Activated the PIR supervision (52 | 5 | 3) which was off.


The message on the unit says

“Status Unset
06 Event(s) > ”

“RF FAIL Zn:1001
FRONT DOOR”

“RF FAIL Zn:1004
DINING PIR”

Does anyone have an idea of what is going on and how I can resolve this?

I am no expert but my feeling is the wireless receiver in/on/near the Galaxy unit is not acknowledging the wireless PIRs. If the problem is the wireless receiver where is it and how can it be replaced?

Change the battery on the front door and dining room ...

Can you kindly elaborate on how this will resolve the issue? I checked the battery power with a multimeter & they are almost the full 3V. I thought that when the power is low there is a message "RF Battery low"

How old are the batteries ? As the batteries are the cheapest option to replace @£2 each that would be the best place to start .... when you say they are almost 3v what actually us the reading as lithium battery’s don’t drain like normally batteries. You may find a new one may be 3.2v and be flagging at 2.8

Did you default the unit or just reboot ?

The batteries are aged anything from 6+ months to probably a few years. I only change them when I get the "RF Battery low" message. Should I change them more often (say yearly)?

The multimeter indicates that the voltages are 3.02, 3.02, 3.03, 3.02, 2.74, 2.86, 3.02, 2.78 on he eight PIRs. The second PIR (3.02V, serial number deleted), and the third (3.03V) are the only ones that do not say "RF FAIL Zn"

I will replace the batteries first & see what happens.

Which zones are the 3 >3.0 v
Sometimes you can get a battery that just fails doesn’t get to the low battery stage ...

Batteries all changed. They were showing 3.23V. £5 each from a large supermarket chain so let me know where your shop is

No change. The alarm will still not set. What is your advice on what I should do next?

Zn 1-4 & 7 , ie 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1013

I had deleted the serial number off 1002 the exit PIR. I try to force tamper by removing the front cover and the code is still not automatically picked up?

Power cycle the panel by disconnecting mains and battery momentarily. Only the time and date will be lost, the settings will remain.

My curious nature still means that I have a few questions that I hope with your name you can answer.

Q1. The codes “RF FAIL Zn:1001 etc" were only visible after I activated the PIR supervision (52 | 5 | 3) which were off. Should I leave them on or off now?

Q2. What is the minimum PIR battery voltage typically before it causes problems? I only ask because I did not get the usual "RF Battery Low" message. Had PIR supervision not been activated I would not have thought of a possible issue with the battery?

Q3. Can I see the signal level of each PIR on the Mk7 LCD Keypad?

Q4. I have never changed the big battery in the Galaxy unit. What is the minimum voltage of this battery for it to operate satisfactorily? Do you have a link for what battery should replace it?

Q5. Where is the actual PIR sensor on the G2-20 (C020-01-C)

Leave supervision on.
Battery voltage is not a good indicator while not under load.
Diagnostics menu should show zone based signal levels.
Change the main battery at least every 3 years if you don't have a meter that can load test. 7ah 12v from Screwfix for under £20.
