lawn in terrible shape

Hi all

I had a lawn laid last year, right at the start of that long dry spell. I cut it regularly but only on the highest cut last year, as was the advice. It looked like this:

I've been cutting it this year, gradually reducing the cut to a height where we can actually use it and it looks terrible. Tried watering it, but it's not improving. Any advice on how to get it
green again? Is most of it dead and needs raking out? I would post a picture (have been trying for weeks) but Diynot cannot seem to handle image sizes above 1mb.

And another. It really does look awful - the second pic is with about a week's growth. Is most of it just dead and if so, why and what do I do about it?

Was that turf that was laid last year?
What preparation prior to laying the turf was done?

Looks like it needs a feed and a good watering.

yes, laid last year. Right at hte start of that long dry spell. We watered it throughout that spell and it looked great last year (although that could have been the long length of the grass disguising the problem). I've had the sprinklers on when it's been dry this year too.

As regards ground prep: the garden was a mess before. They got a digger in to remove the hedges, turf, brambles etc. Probably about 4 truckloads of waste went. They then rotivated; topsoil + fertiliser (I think 4 trucks of topsoil/root zone - I was surprised by just how much); then turf. Although I've been out today to take a look and there are brambles coming through the lawn which is a concern. Do I let the lawnmower deal with them or do I need to dig them out?

Try a weed and feed to also deal with the brambles, the sooner the better while they are not well established.
