Agreed...If boiler is making weird gurgling and bubbling type noises especially.

I've always thought terminals with the little plate were better quality, and the wire should be under the plate (other side from the screw). So the wire is gripped but isn't subjected to screwing action, specially for multicore flex, less important for cable. Is that wrong? If the wire goes between the screw and the plate what's the point of the plate?

That is true when there are two plates, one fixed plate and one plate that moves as the screw is turned and the wire is compressed between the two plates.
