Weight on glass conservatory roof.

Our conservatory has double glazed panels using 6mm glass. The panels are 2100mm long by 790mm wide and the roof is lean to at about 20 -25 degrees of horizontal.

I need to do some work on the window above the conservatory but before taking on the cost and work of erecting scaffold for what will be no more than an hours work, I wonder if the glass would take my weight (95kg) if I used a wide crawling board.

I tried to get some information from the suppliers, but I can't talk to their technical guys and all I have been getting from their customer services is - they are extremely busy and will get back to you as soon as they can.

So guys - would you think that standing on the glass panels for up to an hour would be taking too great a risk?

To be honest I don't really know but I wouldn't want to stand on any conservatory roof

What’s the frame? Used crawl boards on my timber frame conservatory many time and only had plastic sheet roof panels .

I've worked on many a polycarb roof with ply or planked spreaders. Scary at first but you would be surprised how strong they are.

Funny but carrying out lots of demolition work educates you to how buildings work and what they are capable of.

You would be amazed how strong glass is, especially toughened glass. Id be more nervous of laminated.

Fitting roof glass is fun! -its amazing how flexible toughened glass is -Ive seen a long roof glass unit bend by easily 6"

You would have no problems putting weight near the edge of the glass, best o keep away from the centre of the panel, but to be honest it would almost certainly take your weight if you stood on it in the middle

However if you have a self clean coating any grit on your shoe would scratch it.

Your best way is to remove some of the capping screws, lay a scaffold plank or similar down across the rafters and put a few screws in. You could do more than one row to get upto where you need to be.

Dont ever climb on glass if its at wet, or about to rain -if you do, you will you self back on ground earlier than you planned

I used a sheet of ply between timbers and with non slip carpet sheet pinned underneath, a few batons screwed to top give a foothold, rope off the top tied off over the roof stops it sliding down.
