I need some wire rope clamps (like a small U bolt). They are sized for wire rope but I need to clamp M8 threaded rod. Please has anyone any idea what size I need.

Thanks

You just need to find a decent seller who has given all the dimensions...

I personally would go for the size linked to, i.e. 'the next size up', so that your rod doesn't get wedged in the tapered jaws of the 'body' and actually gets clamped to the body's valley properly by the hoop/u-bolt.

edit: I hope you don't mean to actually clamp TWO threaded rods together though do you?

Thanks, helped a lot. Do not need to clamp two threaded rods together. Just need to clamp single lengths of M8 threaded rod to flat surfaces.

They sell them in Toolstation - they should let you try before you buy.

Still not resolved.

In the link provided above it shows a 10mm wire rope clamp and a chart is provided with all the sizes on I require.

The most relevant being thread size "D" on the chart.

and

Distance between legs of thge U bolt "B" on the chart.

If I require these clips for 8mm threaded rod I can easily identify my requirement from the chart.

The M6 threaded grips have 8.5mm between the U bolt legs.

The thing is it is not made clear in the link whether the 10mm refers to "B" OR "D" in the chart.

Furthermore I have found 2 other sellers with similar charts on their sites and just to be sure I contacted them through ebay to ask what the size referred to in the heading and they both have replied and advise rope size. In one case there is no such rope size in the chart.

I have to say the charts make it all clear but it also needs making clear in the description whether the size is rope size or thread size.

Still confused

It means it is for 10mm wire rope, because when you use the clamp normally, the two wire ropes sit one above the other and get crushed together...

So, it's going to pretty much match "B", but they make "B" a little oversize on (nearly) each one.

But, you see what I mean about the tapered jaws, and how you should get one where "B" is larger than what you'd think you need for use with M8 rod, or it will get stuck in the taper and not sit in the valley...

What thread size would the 10mm grips be?

In the ones I linked to, that is "D" in the chart, but I don't think that will be a standard thing for all manufacturers/sellers.

I would not expect these to grip threaded rod that well, because they rely upon pinching wire rope to provide the grip. Not sure what the OP is trying to achieve, but wouldn't a pair of nuts with some sort of bracket trapped between them work better?

I suspect op wants to clamp rod to metal plate by sitting saddle on said plate and drilling two holes through to match the ones in saddle, then place rod in the saddle, fit the clamp through saddle and metal plate secured with the nuts
?? or not

As the primary purpose of the clamps are to secure rope of a specific diameter then its the “B” dimension that identifies it size. With smaller clamps the “D” size is limited to a size the nuts wont hit each other?

Specifically I need these clamps to clamp M8 threaded rod onto a flat surface which more than likely will be 3mm stainless plate. I am making a Wind Vane Steering System for my sailing boat and the threaded rod will have a counterbalance (lump of lead) on it to return the wind vane to its vertical position when the wind has blown it over. Other wind vane systems do seem to use these clamps for this application.
