Looks like someone has tiled onto old tiles and what you're seeing is an impression of the rear of the original tile in the original tile adhesive.

Might still be tile cement the may have "buttered" each tile before sticking up.
 
That would make sense. These are about that thickness. And yes, they’re a sod to get off. Thanks all.
 
SDS drill on hammer only and a scutch chisel bit should shift them!
 
I hate these tiles. I call them two bird tiles.

They covered a wall of a service area on the A1 with all the tiles the same way round except one.

Every time I went there that one bl***Y upside down tile caught my attention.

Yes "chicken tiles" had them in primrose they did green blue and pink also I think, they must have sold millions!
