Reasonable or overpriced quote?

Hi,

I have quite a few minor issues with my roof and have finally got around to trying to get these fixed.

Briefly these are:

Two cracked concrete tiles.

Ill fitting bargeboards on one side, there is a gap of varying size from bottom to top under the cement boards.

Front and back fascia boards are too short (height wise) so the end tiles are higher than the rest, also in one corner the first five or so tiles are balanced on plastic spacers of decreasing size.

At the front the felt/membrane is trapped in places behind the fascia board.

The aluminium gutters have some brackets and screws missing.

Apart from the cracked tiles all these issues were the work of the people who replaced the fascias/soffits 15 years ago. I only noticed last year.

I have a quote for the following:

Take down gutter and fascia board at front and back. Replace with fascia of the correct height.

Replace first strip of felt if the existing is unusable from being trapped behind fascia.

Refit gutter and replace missing brackets/screws.

Fix 2" beading to cover gap on incorrectly fitting barge board.

Replace the broken tiles.

The estimate for this is £950.00

It seems steep to me, what do you think? The alternative is to do nothing until it becomes a real problem. I have no leaks I know about.

Not sure what to do.

Thanks,

Adey

How does it compare with the second and third quote?

Note:
"I haven't got a second or third quote" is not the correct answer.

I'm in the process of doing this. This guy I have used before and I was just hoping to go with him.

But the estimate seems way too much for the work involved. The materials are no more than £100.00 and I doubt if it's more than a days work for two people.

So the rest should be to cover everything else a tradesman needs to run his business and make a decent profit, pay running costs (van petrol etc), insurance etc.

Personally I think a roofer is worth £200 a day. It's a dangerous profession. So for this job he will need probably two people as he is not using scaffold, so 2 x 200 = £400 + £100 materials. So any quote should be roughly £500.00. At £250.00 a day it's £600.00

So by asking for £950.00 he is charging £425.00 a day. It's too much, so I guess he doesn't need or want the work. Or maybe I sounded too keen!

But it's an estimate not a quote, but an estimate can only go up surely!

You seem to know what a tradesman should charge, know what everything costs and have worked out what a roofers life is worth. Why don't you just tell everyone that visits what you are prepared to pay and see how you get on?

Good luck.(y)

Have you been out all day in the hot sun again grumpy?

I posted a link with average tradesman rates in 2018, it's awaiting moderator approval apparently.

Is it wrong to discuss the estimate with the roofer or will it be seen as awkward?

To be honest we can't afford it anyway. I just thought it sensible to fix things before they got worse.

It’s pointless. It won’t cause him to change his quote, and will just pee him off so if he wasn’t particularly bothered about doing it, he’ll be even less so.

Just get more quotes, it really is the only way for you to know what your job is actually worth.

I think materials will be more than £100. To replace the felt he’s going to have to pull off the first 3 or 4 rows of tiles and battens, then felt it and fit eaves trays.

I think the price is right.
