We are looking at installing a MF independent ceiling whcih hang from the original joists. The instructions say attach the fixed metal hanger to the existing joist with "appropriate" fixings. Great! So I plan to drill two holes in the metal angled hanger and screw these into the side of the joists, but what fixing should I use (joists are 8" x 2"). Are drywall screws appropriate??

Nah, they'll be a bit skinny. Curious why the hangars haven't got holes in them already- I'd be using 1 3/4" x 10 screws myself

Thanks guys - yeah, they're not "joist hangers", they are angles metal with no holes. You're supposed to drill holes and attach to joists with "appropriate fixing". It's a British Gypsum product.

I actually gave British Gypsum a call, and they said if you're attaching to sides of joists, use drywall screws, ensuring min. depth of 25mm into wood. Anybody know anout the strength of these - I just think they might shear?

Don't you believe British Gypsum who make the MF suspended ceiling system :?:

Well, yes I do. But the reason for my last post was hoping someone would either say "yeah, those drywall screws are tough", or "What, they shear like crazy" ... just waiting for some affirmation from more "experienced" guys that do this sort of stuff everyday.

Don't you think British Gypsum are 'experienced' in giving technical advice on the fixing of their own suspended ceiling system, and would they be likely to recommend fixings that might shear and allow the ceiling to collapse :?::!:
If somebody says these drywall screws will shear like crazy tell British Gypsum immediately.
