I need to replace an outside bulk head light as the old unit has failed. The light is to be attached to a upvc ceiling in an outside porch. Needless to say, the mounting holes are in different places on the new fitting. Are there any particular wall plugs for attaching fittings to upvc as the upvc is comparativley thin.

This seems a situation where you need an oversize mounting plate, big enough to allow fixing into something more solid.

So this would be glued(?) to the front of the upvc then the light fixed to that, spreading the weight over a greater area?

Personally I would avoid glue, its too permanent if you have to make adjustments. But I can't say how you would fix it, but you've got the gist of my suggestion - "spreading the weight over a greater area?."

Yep. Thats great.
Ive just taken another look. Now im not sure if the upvc is installed over wooden boards or directly to the rafters. If over boards i may just get away with some long screws. I think i am going to have to drill some exploratory holes.

That would be my preferred solution.

SFK good suggestion. I should of thought of that.

The house was about 15 years old when we bought it and the upvc was already fitted.
Ive drilled some small holes to see whats behind and its just fixed to the rafters so long screws are no use. Im going to try self tapping screws as suggested by SFK and put a few extra screws into the rafters where I can. Hopefully this will provide enough grip. The fitting is not that heavy so it should hold.

can you not drill the new fitting and reuse the holes from the old fitting, you dont always have to use the manufacturers mounting holes

Or how about not fitting a bulkhead light but instead put a waterproof LED rope light behind the bottom lip of the fascia?

The old fittings only had two screws about 1.5 inches apart they didnt really support the light properly which was 12 inches in diameter. There was a marked gap between the fitting and the upvc.

I did look at these but there is a rather large hole in the upvc where the wires come into the lamp which would need to be tidied up. There are also several other holes where the person who fitted the last lights attempted to attach them(or had previous lights). There are actually three lights connected in parallel that need changing, each with their own sets of holes so would have looked a bit of a mess if i had attempted to repair the upvc
