I have done a little welding in the past but have always used a tradition mask, have just bought a new auto dimming mask and I', not so sure about it.

It dims instantly if you look at a florescent tube, and dims instantly if you point the TV remote control at it (IR), but it won't dim for an incredibly bright LED nor will it dim if you look at the sun.#

Have not tried it with a welding spark yet, would like to be 100% sure it is working properly first.

Just flick a cheapo lighter in front of it to test if it works on the sparks from the lighter. You might have to set the sensitivity, shade etc.

I employ approximately 20 welders. They all use speedglass type welding masks and we don't get any issues with arc eye.

Ive never done welding but I can imagine the concern -I hear arc eye isnt nice.....

You won't get arc eye with a quick one second blast to see whether the visor is darkening!

Check out the Welders Warehouse for all your welding needs!
Im onto my second mask from them, and they do replacement glasses too.
I have an Aldi cheapo which isnt adjustable......it darkens readily enough but its recovery time is poor so not much good really.
John :)

Even if it didn't darken, the basic shade is enough to not injure yourself, crack on
Yes, this is sort of what I have read; even if it does not darken the shield still cuts out 100% UV, so if that is true I guess you can't get 'Arc Eye' as that is caused by UV, still don't think it would do you much good though - see spots for a week or two.

Anyway, I stuck a patch on one eye (just to half my risk) and sparked up and it sees to work just fine, and the eye without the patch on seems fine. LOL
