Surely that means that they will know when he is in using a device at home, and when he is out, using a device somewhere else?

Maybe devil’s advocate, but people have also been known to be able to hack into the smart meters, especially Gen 1 meters and remotely turn off the supply. Not the end of the world if you’re an average person, but if you work from home or it’s the supply to a business, no power could cost you lot of money.

If the meters were more widespread a threat to cut off power to a street, district or city could be a significant threat to a power company. Gen 2 meters are better protected, but remember when we only had WEP or WPA for wireless internet security and thought they were good? (Both flawed and easily hacked now.)
