if it's a blade it'll have to be something really thin - my penknife won't do it. We'll find something hopefully, watch this space ... prolly tomorrow now tho !

A couple of sewing needles ,one each side of the plug maybe ? Its only a rubber seal keeping the plug in place.

terryplumb, tried needles and pins (remember the Searchers?) but couldn't get even a fine needle in. While looking round I found a bit of blu-tac. Stuck that on waited a second then whisked it upwards. The plug lifted then fell off the blu-tac and went in again! Tried same again but this time I was ready for it and got a blade in as soon as it came up a bit then worked it out. Will post pic as soon as poss but looks like the horizontal bar bears on the underside of a plastic cylinder almost as wide as the plug so it doesn't matter which side it goes. I will measure the distance from the plughole down to the bar when it is up and also when down. It looks to be too far down. I think whoever fitted it might have fluked it with the bar bearing just on the screw-head!
Terry.

Looks like this

hang on looks like the horiz bar is supposed to bear on the screw head after all. However it has too much side-to-side movement to reliably do that. Also the screw is really too short - if I screwed it out far enough, even with the locknut, it would risk falling off. Need to modify this somehow ....

How much can you lower the screw ,5 or 6mm would do it ,and was it loose ?
You should also remove the horizontal bar to examine it ,you should be able to reach in and undo the nut ( its round ) which is only hand tightened. Be aware that it has a plastic sphere fixed permanently on the horizontal bar ( if its loose its a problem ) and a separate plastic bush that can fall out ,make sure it isn't lost. There shouldn't be sideway movement on the horizontal bar ,it should just pivot up and down.
