Extractor fan with timer

Trouble is people wouldn't turn the light on if it's already light in there. Thank you all for all the advice on this. I'll try the momentary switch option.

They/you would if they want the fan on.

I think you are inventing a problem where there is none - apart from the people involved.

Do you have anything on your TV, or living room light, to ensure it goes off when people forget and leave it on when they go to bed?

Just realised I left the car running when I parked it on Tuesday.

The fan I installed in my bathroom doesn't trigger from the light at all, it is triggered by PIR as you walk in, or by humidity. Once triggered is runs for a preset minimum period, which I set to 20 minutes, or until it no longer 'sees' anyone, or until the humidity declines.

Thanks, Harry. I was just about to suggest that solution!

why will they remember to pull a cord for a fan ?

I always believe in making things as simple as possible for myself and people around me. If the fan operates and turns off without human intervention or need to remember - the better. Unless things obviously need to be operated to enable a function, people tend to forget. Manual one would tend to be forgotten to be turned on, even more likely if it has been turned on, it will be forgotten and left on.

We often walk into the utility room with hands full of washing, or frozen food for the freezer, so it was a frequent problem walking out with hands full, with the intention to go back in to turn the light out. So easy to become distracted and light left on, so I replaced the ordinary switch with an automatic PIR type. No more struggling to find the switch in the dark or light left on.

And then we have the extremely annoying scenario where something automatically happens and you have no control over.

A fan coming on and running for ages when you only nipped in there to put a new toilet roll down would make my teeth itch.

There's something irritating about machines automatically doing things you don't want done.

Deleted.

PC did what I told it to do, but not what I wanted it to do. See what I mean about machines?

No I am not inventing a problem. I know through EXPERIENCE that the fan gets left on. I don't want it to left running and that is why I asked for help. Fans can be left on fior hours and I want mine to turn off - simples! I wasn't born yesterday pal. I think the question is quite reasonable so I can do without the sarcasm thanks.

I don't think EFLI was being particularly sarcastic, he was just simply trying to point out maybe the situation isn't as desperate as it may seem. I'm not sure I care for some of the aggression hinted at it your post.

I didn't say it was DESPERATE!!! I wanted some assistance with a problem. And yes it was sarcasm actually. I don't need anyone to advise me on how I should see things, and I really don't give two hoots what you 'care for'. I was very polite and agreeable and I can do withour sarcasm and that is what it was.
"Just realised I left the car running when I parked it on Tuesday" IS sacasm. Bye

I don't think you read my comment properly. There is already light in the room so why would they turn a light on? If they stank the room out then they would look for a fan wouldn't they? I am beginning to wish I'd never asked.

I'm sorry you feel like that, that a joke to put things in perspective upset you.

As far as I can see everyone here today has been polite and agreeable and helpful too, as far as I can see, and come up with reasonably good ideas.
