The council made us take it out to meet the 45 degree rule from the neighbours rear window, similarly they made us keep that wall along the boundary at 2m high so we'll have to have a slightly sloping ceiling inside.

The local authorities rules and regulations are ridicolous. However, they do what they like when they renovate or build new properties and don't take the current house owners views in to consideration.
Just a quick update - slow progress due to clearing spoil, bringing in materials and some trench flooding/collapse to deal with!
I've made a big 3-4-5 triangle to square off the extension and got it to within 10mm over the 5.5m length - good enough for me.
Then finally some building, first course of blockwork - a mini milestone for me.

Thats a good traditional method -10mm is pretty good.
Just a tip for anybody - the most accurate method is to use triangulation......use a tape measure to set the diagonals, use as many points of reference as required to check.
Every dimension can be broken into a right angled triangle.
