no sooner is one kitchen upgrade problem solved...when along comes another!

Fitted a cooker hood a few weeks ago which has been working just fine but I do have an irritating problem. The vent goes straight out of the kitchen wall. Outside the vent cover (one of those square white plastic ones with 3 flaps which blow out when the fan is on) it is about 2m high in a passageway between our house and next door, the passage being about 1.5m wide, running north to south.

The problem: if there is a wind, blowing down that passage (there often is), it draws the inside flaps that cover and protect the fans on the hood, consequently as they are horizontal they flap up and down and make this tapping noise like Michael Flatley on speed! That can be heard in the living room as we are open plan.

I thought of putting some kind of cowling around the vent, but wonder if the problem will still exist if my theory is correct that it is the wind passing over the vent drawing the flaps up.

Anyone had this type of problem- and fixed it?

Toolstations 10563 sorted mine......heavier flaps, lasts for ever and so much smarter!
John :)

Ha ha that sounds too simple for the way my luck is going! I could try a blob of blutak on them to see if that would work though........ erm, doesn’t the heavier flaps affect the air flow from the lower fan speed setting?

I had the traditional and fragile plastic louvre vents on two bathroom extractors, one tumble drier and the cooker vent.....each one stuck open causing draughts, was attacked by UV light, rattled like hell in the wind and eventually fell to bits. The cooker one also allowed a greasy smell to invade the kitchen which wasnt pleasant if it stuck open.
Ive replaced them all now with the stainless ones and they have been just fine, as well as looking much better.
They dont flap in the breeze, and although they dont open quite as far as the plastic ones did the extraction is still fine.
With the cooker hood on full bore, the vents do flap a little causing a little noise outside but once switched off, all is calm.
John :)

Just to be clear, the flaps that are rattling are the internal ones that are at the cookhood end of the chimney just covering the fan outlet

They will be rattling because the external vent flaps are allowing air movement within the duct - stop the external movement and the internal should follow suit

I used a drain mushroom on mine been in 15 years and never had a problem
