Hi everyone

I'm building a summerhouse and plans have recently changed meaning I've ran into a slight problem with head height for the bifold door.

So I'm trying to gain around 10cm and was playing around with lintel ideas for above the door. Currently I have 2 sticks of 45x120 placed supporting the roof which is again 45x120 with 18mm osb and epdm.

This may sound stupid I've been known for that lol but the opening is only 2m and I'd need to support 2 beams in that opening could I not just use some L shaped steel? Cut one part of the L into the beam and then nail underneath making essentially a flushed lintel?

Can’t you just raise the roof by 100mm?

I guess what you are asking is:

can you cut slots into your ceiling joists to take the web of some angle iron?

A: possibly. Its not ideal but could be a solution, all depending how much you want to cut into it and how much further the joist extends.

Span a timber beam across and put the joists on hangers off that

Raising the roof seems like a big task the roof is complete fascia and guttering etc.

The roof beams are 2.7/2.8m cant remember I'll update when I've measured them I'd say around 40cm over hang from the point where I'd cut into the beam.

As the beams are 120cm I was thinking maximum 50x50x3 galvanized steel 3 meters to cover the 2m opening

Thoughts?

50 x 50 x 3 is a bit small to support the roof TBH. Are the bifolds top hung-they will need morr support.

Could you not cut the joists and fit a beam 120 high. Then outside fit a trimmer to support the roof -it could have some dummy joist ends to make it visually right if you are having no soffit.

Or could you have the angle coming downwards covering the external face of the bifold head?

Thinking about it the front of the beams have 120x45 joining them at the front, will this cover the load if I attach hangers?

I had a similar problem. I used a much shallower timber for the lintel, but doubled it up horizontally.

I also cut away the floor under the door, removed the ply boarding and shaved the joists a bit.

All good fun...

All you need to do is cut your joists back to where your lintel is going -I reckon 2no 120 x 45 would do over a 2m span.

Then fit the short joist pieces to the outside of the beam -using jiffy hangers
