Can't unscrew butterfly bolt in toilet.

I need to replace the syphon on my downstairs toilet but having difficulty separating the water tank from the base.

The left side butterfly screw wing bolt seems to be rusted against the screw thread. I know it needs to unscrew in a clockwise direction as I’ve managed to unscrew the right-hand bolt.

I’ve tried using a hammer and nail punch on the left wing of the butterfly screw in an attempt to nudge it clockwise but to no avail.

Any advice would be welcome.

Depending on access, angle grinder, Dremel tool with grinder wheel, hacksaw, hacksaw blade wrapped in tape.

sadly, this will prompt you to buy a few stainless coach bolts (carriage bolts), washers and wingnuts for next time. I have an idea they are M8, but measure to make sure. Grease the thread before assembly. If you have more than one WC in the house, buy enough for all of them.

The square shank under the domed head fits into the metal plate you will find later.

Junior hacksaw as close to the washer as possible, combined with lots of naughty words and bruised knuckles it's one of those horrible jobs we all hate!
Dremel with a cut off disc or multitool with metal blade if you have them.
I usually have a go with releasing oil and small pipe grips first though.

Thanks guys, I'm learning by the minute here.

Yes, I was viewing bolt from the top, unscrewing underneath, which is clockwise. If I was lying on my back viewing from the ground, I'd be unscrewing anticlockwise.

Spay it and leave it overnight then try again.

Get a pair of mole grips/pliers/adjustable spanner on it. Failing that, look up 'Wing nut socket' or make one yourself out of an old deep reach socket.

Even if you do manage to undo the thing a bit, chances are it will start to spin......make every endeavour to cut the flamer off if it doesn't give up immediately!

if you have a dremel, you may be able to slit one side of the nut. Then, when you put a bit of turn on it, it will split open and come off the bolt.

No it isn't.

By turning it the same way.

Do clocks go anti-clockwise if viewed from the back?
