In fact they go sunwise! Sun dials were developed in the Northern hemisphere so early clocks were built to run the same way.(y)
 
Got it all fixed.

Took a lot longer and was more effort than expected.

The winged nut came loose with a "winged nut socket" and torque wrench, so thanks to Motman for recommending that.

After 2 hours of effort the syphon was replaced, and the flush now noticeably stronger - very satisfying.:)

All in all it cost me £43 to do the job.
