d a pozi 2 drill bit. How do I get it out?
Will drilling around outside then using grips work?

if damage to the front timber is acceptable, just remove enough wood to get some mole grips onto it.

Cut a slot with a dremel and use a flat screwdriver.

A dremel is basically a multi tool isn't it? I haven't got one but I guess they're useful. What other things do u use them for?

Can you drill the screw head away, and then rotate the beam its holding - or is it secured elsewhere?
John :)

heat the screw with the tip of a soldering iron, keep reapplying it to get the whole length of the screw hot then gently try unscrewing it with any bit that can get purchase on it - if you can get it poking out a bit use grips on the head.

Dremel's are rotating multi tools (basically mini die grinders) They're known sometimes as 'get out of s*** kit' as they normally get pulled out when something else has gone a bit wrong. :D

sometimes a flat bit shorter than the diameters tapped home will give enough grip to get it out
other options assuming the head is small enough is battery drill open chuck jaws till the jaws just clear the screw head
run the drill so the jaws wear away a few mm off wood[perhaps 5mm] to get the jaws behind the head and tighten onto the head
in 1st gear very very slowly undo

Which kind of dremel wheel will be sufficient to cut a slot in a hardened screw? And how do you hold the dremel still whilst you start the cut?

I only ask because I have never used one.

The dremel 456 EZ cutting disks will cut any steel

They are basically mini angle grinder disks. You will need eye protection. There is very little force so its easy to hold steady. Rest your hand on the wood and slowly lower the tool. Go slow to make a neat slot.

Also works for paint filled slotted screws. I've taken out dozens like this.

I see that Dremel wheel is better than the ones my (budget) tool uses. It has a collet and takes a thin, brown cutting disk with a small hole in the middle that breaks easily if you hold it at a less than perfect angle. I used it to cut some brass lock levers and it took an age.

Yes. Your tool sounds like my old one. The disks were small and brittle. So small you couldn't really get a good angle to cut and so brittle it was 50\50 they'd last the cut. These dremel ones are great. I've cut some pretty big bolts with them, even cut some bits of old car for welding where I couldn't get the proper angle grinder in.
