Hi all

Just bought these wooden planters off Facebook Marketplace.

Id like to put soil in them for plants. Do I need to line them with black plastic? In the winter wont the roots rot becuase the waters got nowhere to go? If I put holes in the plastic so the water can escape wont that defeat the point of the plastic?

All wood planters rot in time about 8 years is what I get, drill good sized holes and treat the inside and holes with a plant friendly product. Line with sturdy plastic cut out around the holes. I tend to use a heavy duty stapler to secure the liner around the rim.

I lined ours with heavy duty rubble bags and used a staple gun to secure it.

Why not just use weed control mat? Paint it inside and out with your preferred preservative/pain then drill a few holes in the base of the planters, about 20-25mm should do it. Staple a liner of weed control around the inside, (won't matter if it overlaps in the corners), fill with good topsoil and plant out. I did this to some of mine about 4 years ago and they are still going strong.

Old bags will be fine black tends to look best. I would check out plant friendly stuff at garden centres.

Making holes means the soil won't be waterlogged in heavy rainfall or overwatering. You need some holes, not many.
I lined our planters with pond liner material to limit wood contacting wet soil. A screwdriver to poke holes where the holes in the planter were drilled to help with drainage.
Consider mulching in summer to avoid the soil drying out too much.
