Water stains

Hi
We had a leak which has been found and repaired, unfortunately it has left a brown stain on the kitchen ceiling, tried painting it 3 times but it still shows through.
Any info on the best way to tackle this ?
Ceiling has been papered and painted with Matt white.

Cheap white Oil Based undercoat or a more expensive Stain Block over it. Then the white emulsion you used.

Plus 1 for Nige F's advice.

Oil based undercoat is the cheaper option but oil based undercoat takes days to cure. If you apply the emulsion over the the top of it too soon, the paint may "fisheye" (read: paint pulls and reverse "pools".

A shellac based paint such as Blockaid or BIN will be overpaintable with your emulsion in half an hour or so. Shellac paints are not cheap though.

As a professional decorator, I am inclined to use the shellac based paints for two primary reasons- 1. drying time and 2. I use it so frequently that it makes economic sense. For a DIYer however, the initial outlay might seem prohibitive, that said, it should be good for a hand full of years once opened.

BTW, the best way of cleaning brushes after using shellac is with bog standard household ammonia. Ammonia is alkali, put the brush in and it will dissolve the shellac. Overnight, the ammonia evaporates off, you are left with harmless white powder in water in the container.

So yeah, any oil based paint but take 24h to dry, or a little tin of stain blocker that will dry in x hours.
