Need advice replacing a loft hatch

I need advice replacing a loft hatch.
It's an irregular shape. Not a perfect square.
It's roughly 65cm x 65cm + already has a frame around it, that's probably 70cm x 70cm.

What happened: yesterday there was a *massive* bang in the house.
The loft hatch door had fallen off and came tumbling down the stairs.
It would have hit ANYONE in the house - one of the kids maybe.
The damn thing is a heavy piece of wood.

IMPORTANT: I want to replace with something lighter - so never ever risk the thing falling down ever again.

The screws holding the door in had come loose - the cheap wood had worn out.

I actually had the clever idea of turning the wood around and screwing holes in again on the other side (and risk falling down after another 10 years). But as mentioned above: it's NOT a perfect square. GRRR!

I've looked around for loft hatch doors - can't find anything close to the measurements I need.

buy a new all in onw door and frame and add it to your loft. This involves possible/probable cutting and making good.
seek advice.

Carefully use a bit of thin MDF ( or several) to trace the actual shape of the door so that you have a good template to make a new hatch.
This could be a solid ply door or
you could use the template to make a wooden frame that exactly fits the hole. Ensure that the frame is reinforced with timber where the hinges and catches will be.
Then skin the frame with mdf/ply
Fill the new door with something like kingspan and skin again

Actually worried fitting on solid wood.
Was hoping there would be a lightweight plastic alternative?
I had to buy 2 hatches for 2 other places. These were super lightweight (but allegedly rated super high for insulation).

So... that's the thing. Let's say I do this... there's still a chance that in 1, 2, 5 or 10 years the screws will come loose
I use the loft all the time, that's part of the problem.

your problem is that the screws are probably too small for the weight of the door, and there isn't enough meat in the door for decent screws.

or a standard size and DIY or pay to have the opening adjusted to fit.

or DIY/Pay to have something fit the hole.

If it was me I'd make a door as described above.
3 x bits of 18mm ply and a bit of 2x2 to make a frame. Screw the hinges into the 2x2
make sure that it fits the hole well then skin it.
Kingspan or similar is cheap at B&Q and is light.

Fit ready made hatch , adjust opening to suit.
