hi
I have a grant oil fired boiler that is approx 4 years old. Recently the burner has started locking out. If I press the reset button it will start and fire and heat enough water for a shower etc... but then locks out. Sometimes it will stay on for a couple of days and give hot water on demand but will then lock out again. This was serviced around 6 months ago and a new nozzle was fitted and a new filter at the discharge point of the tank. Is the ‘smoke colour/exhaust’ any indication of what is happening? When this was operating perfectly the smoke/exhaust was white but now sometimes it white but other times when running is is almost colourless. Thanks

Servicing is required, but is no guarantee against component failure. Your service engineer needs come back at your cost to identify the fault

The White smoke is in fact steam when it's condensing it could be a number of things that need checking first is the oil pressure then photo cell then coil then capacitor but a service engineer will say it's an intermittent fault as when you reset and it starts then you take away the fault the best thing is when it won't reset as then you have a fault and something to fix. Yes there is not much height difference between the tank and boiler. There is a filter on the tank outlet. I have bled through the bleed screw on the burner. Is there anything else I should be doing? Thanks

It's would be impossible to talk you through fault finding so I think the best idea is to get a oil boiler
engineer to look at the boiler it would be less messing about and quicker.Bob

We had this problem, fought with it for a while (even using a suction pipe to help prime). Ended up installing a Tigerloop.

If it has run O.k. for 4 years, then oil supply and tank height should not now be a problem. You can waste a lot of time and money following up internet service suggestions. As Bob says, call your engineer. There may well be something he will find quite easily.

Sounds like the solenoid on your oil valve is dropping out when hot, or maybe the photo cell is sooted up. I'm not familiar with this boiler though

Thanks for the help. I did contact another engineer yesterday and he advised checking for water in the oil which I have done and there is none. Just by a process of elimination, gut feeling etc...I would say the solenoid/photo cell sounds like the problem I have. It just doesn’t ‘sound right’ after it tries to re-fire then locks out. I am just waiting for him to come and visit. Thanks
